Hybridizing with Phalaenopsis Species
by Bill Livingston

Phalaenopsis fimbriata

This species has one-inch pure white to light green or greenish white flowers. An identifying characteristic is transverse magenta lines or bars located on the basal half, especially the inner half of the lateral sepals. The midlobe of the lip is vivid magenta and the callus on lateral lobes is a contrasting yellow. Years ago, I crossed P. fimbriata with a large white; some seedlings' flowers were white, and some a faint ice green color, which gave a cooling effect. The shape was not that good, but I was surprised that the substance was rather firm and rigid. This species could produce some interesting crosses if used to breed for greens. Other colors and patterned flowers on hybrids today might produce some interesting hybrids.

The Phalaenopsis Special Edition of Orchid Digest can be ordered from Orchid Digest for $22. Highly recommended.
