These resources are proportionally heavy to the region of California from San Francisco south to Santa Cruz. However, in terms of trips, any good riding that can be done as a day trip or a weekend from anywhere in the greater Bay Area, may be included here. In terms of general information, there is no real geographical restriction.

Action Item! Follow the link, and write a letter!

Imagine being able to ride your bike from Saratoga Gap to the Pacific Ocean and back - completely off-road! This has long been one of our fondest dreams, but it's one that, to date, has been unattainable, largely because the first 1/3 of this route passes through Castle Rock State Park, which is completely closed to bikes (even on fireroads). We now have an opportunity to change this. Castle Rock State Park is currently undergoing a review of its "General Plan", and one of the issues under consideration is whether (& if so, to what extent) mountain bikes should be allowed in the park.

ROMP, which stands for Responsible Organized Mountain Pedalers, is the mountain cycling advocacy and social group for San Mateo and Santa Clara counties (located in the San Francisco Bay Area). Mountain biking is becoming even more popular, increasing the need for volunteers to work at maintaining or improving access to trails. ROMP needs YOUR support to help these changes come about. Please join ROMP, IMBA, and/or volunteer time to maintaining trails or towards trail access.

This paper provides an overview of the current use of non-motorized vehicles (NMVs) in Asian cities, the characteristics of NMVs and facilities that serve them, and policies that influence their use. The paper identifies conditions under which NMV use should be encouraged for urban transport, obstacles to the development of NMVs, and identifies desirable steps that might be taken to develop a Non-Motorized Transport Strategy for a city or region.

Bicycle Shops / Manufacturers

  • Another Bike Shop "Your Mountain Bike Dream Store" - One of my local shops
Another Bike Shop is located in the small , but very progressive coastal town of Santa Cruz, California. Our community is 70 miles south of San Francisco on the scenic Highway 1. This majestic road follows the coastline of the Pacific ocean and passes right by our store. We have become a very common stop for bicyclists touring along the California coast because we are the first shop after a long stretch of nothing but beautiful scenery and cool ocean breezes. We sit at the base of the redwood covered hills of the Santa Cruz mountains with miles of single track under the forest canopy waiting to be explored. Within 5 minutes of our store you can be riding on some of the most famous and challenging trails this side of Moab Utah.
  • Bontrager
Another local company that makes great bicycles.
  • Santa Cruz Mountain Bikes
A small, local company that produces some of the most versatile full-suspension designs available. Detailed information on our bikes, the Heckler, Heckler SL, Heckler X, Super 8, Tazmon, Jackal and Chameleon, are available on their respective pages. On the Reviews page, you will find in-depth reviews of our bikes found in bicycle magazines. Curious about prices? On the Pricing page, they are available for all configurations.

Motorized Bicycles

Were you aware that in the State of California, motorized bicycles are: "exempt from the motor vehicle financial responsibility, driver license, and license plate requirements", as long as the driver is at least 16 years of age, and wears a helmet?
  • California DMV Motorized Bicycle Specification
CA Vehicle Code (VC) §406(a) defines a motorized bicycle, commonly called a moped, as a two- or three-wheeled vehicle which can be temporarily propelled by pedals or by an electric motor. An automatic transmission connects the wheels to an engine which produces less than 2 gross brake horsepower. It has a top speed of 30 miles per hour on level ground. (Follow link for more information.)
  • MX-5 Bicycle Motors
The MX-5 engine is a 36 cc. two-stroke forced air cooled engine with electronic ignition, which means very low maintenance. It is extremely fuel efficient with over 100 miles per gallon and will power a bicycle at speeds of up to 30 MPH.
  • power-assist@cycling.org Power-assisted cycling mail list
"The purpose of the list is the discussion of issues relating to and arising from the use of power generation and assistance for primarily human powered vehicles. Vehicles is a broad term which includes anything from bikes, upright and recumbent, to light cars and non-land transport. The only limitation is that the prime power source must be human." (Includes list archives.)
  • Power-Cycling in the UK
"... and apart from the pedals, the modern moped has little to distinguish it from the scooter or motorbike; in fact, most are too heavy to pedal any significant distance without the motor, not to mention the cost to buy, maintain, and make road legal. Ideally, what is required is a device which can be retro-fitted to an ordinary cycle as an accessory, without significantly reducing rider performance when not in use."
  • Whizzers
This museum site has some great photos of museum-quality Whizzers, highly recommended. (The Whizzer was a WWII era motorized bicycle that still has numerous enthusiasts.)
  • 1997 World Solar Bicycle Race in Akita, Japan
Official race results, with links to photos of the vehicles; very fun! Most of the site is in Japanese, but this part is in English.
  • ZAP Power Systems Zero Air Pollution
Electric after-market motors for bicycles. While the California specification allows for slower electric motorized bicycles, you have the added benefit of zero air pollution.

Friends of Bicycling

  • Clif Bar
We created the Clif Bar because nobody else could. Years of bicycle racing, climbing, skiing, and triathalons forced us to eat a lot of "high energy foods" that were so low on taste they were hard to eat. And since we're bakers by trade, and we love good food, we thought that we could do better ourselves.
  • Krebs Maps
Krebs Maps are specifically created for the purpose of Cycling. There are both Touring and Mountain Biking versions for most of the West Coast. These are the best maps for cycling that I have seen.
  • Odwalla Juice for Humans
    Really good stuff. Highly recommended.
  • Power Bar
Highly digestible, high-density, high-protein food bar.
  • REI
The Original Co-op Mountaineering Store is now on-line.
