Hybridizing with Phalaenopsis Species
by Bill Livingston

Phal lueddemanniana v. heiroglyphica

This is one species which cannot be misidentified, because it has unique hieroglyphic markings. It has rather large flowers, two inches in diameter, with cream white sepals and petals with small cinnamon circles and spots which form hieroglyphic markings on its pointed segments. It has been hybridized with many other specie& to create primary hybrids. When these hybrids are bred to large standard whites they can produce some dark yellows, but generally with poor shape. I once saw a cross of a standard pink P. Donald Riggs and P. lueddemanniana var. hieroglyphica, and a beautiful shell pink color was predominant among the seedlings. The shape was outstanding with no markings on the flower segments.

The Phalaenopsis Special Edition of Orchid Digest can be ordered from Orchid Digest for $22. Highly recommended.
