Hybridizing with Phalaenopsis Species
by Bill Livingston

Phalaenopsis aphrodite

Phalaenopsis aphrodite has a smaller flower than P. amabilis, although both are white. Another distinguishing feature is a green flush in the throat of P. aphrodite, and it has a four-horned callus on its lip, while P. amabilis has two horns. Taiwanese hybridizers are using this species extensively to breed cold tolerance into their hybrids; breeders in the United States are also producing some nice hybrids with increased flower count. We now have some very nicely shaped and awarded clones to use for hybridizing. The Taiwanese form of this species has also contributed to the production of miniature phalaenopsis with branched spikes of small white flowers.

The Phalaenopsis Special Edition of Orchid Digest can be ordered from Orchid Digest for $22. Highly recommended.
